1944-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Extreme extra thickness on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, the eagle's head, the outer lower wings, and the wreath defines the doubling on the 1944-S Washington Quarter WDDR-001, struck in 90% silver. Obverse die markers include a die scratch southwest from the lower I in LIBERTY; a die crack east through the forehead into the upper hair; a second die crack east-west through the hair above the forehead; and a die crack across the base of the bust. The reverse carries two strong diagnostics: the mint mark is identified as the Ball Serif S style; and a die gouge forming a dot appears on the leaf above the branch north of the T in QUARTER. Cross-references: CONECA 1-R-VI; Wexler Variety ID 1944-S 25¢ WDDR-001. The extreme extra thickness on the reverse legends and eagle, combined with the Ball Serif S mintmark, the multi-crack obverse, and the dot die gouge north of QUARTER, provides a comprehensive attribution package for this wartime silver quarter doubled die entry.
