1944 (S) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

1944-S WDDO-001, which VarietyVista lists as DDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1944-S Washington quarter, which Wexler cross-references to the Cherrypickers number FS-25-1944S-101, with 017.5, to CONECA 1-O-I and to Breen #4325; VarietyVista gives it as FS-101. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a Class I clockwise spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, the lower end of the ribbon and the date, with master die doubling under the nose and on the lower part of Washington's ear. On the obverse a crack heads east over the upper forehead into the hair, an east-west crack passes through the upper hair, and a crack crosses the bottom of the bust; nothing is noted on the reverse. Jim Lafferty submitted it. VarietyVista describes medium spread on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, on LIBERTY, and on the date and the designer's initials, and gives the reporter as unknown. It lists the reverse as MMS-004 (Ball serif). Under UVC-0438 and DMR-003, an early stage A is unconfirmed and stage B has both sides in a middle state. Stage C, late, shows a crack across the bottom of the bust, two cracks in the upper hair with one reaching onto the forehead, and a crack down the eagle's right wing.
