1944-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Cross-referenced in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-25-1944S-101 (017.5), CONECA 1-O-I, and Breen #4325, this 1944-S Washington Quarter carries multiple significant catalog listings confirming its importance. The doubling is Class I with clockwise spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, designer's initials, bottom of the ribbon, and the date. Master die doubling is also visible on the underside of Washington's nose and lower ear — features originating in the master die rather than the working die. Struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint during WWII, this quarter comes from a period of limited S-mint production. The obverse carries three die cracks: one east across the upper forehead into hair, another east-west through the upper hair, and a third across the base of the bust. The convergence of Cherrypickers, CONECA, and Breen listings makes this one of the most thoroughly cross-referenced Washington Quarter doubled dies, ensuring demand from collectors who consult any of these standard references.
