1944-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-002 features multiple die cracks through Jefferson's portrait at mid-life. Die markers UVC-190 / DMR-003: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse at MDS, a die crack from the top of the head south through hair at MDS, and a die crack from top of forehead south behind the eye to the jaw; Stage C with a die crack from the upper right dome south-southwest to upper pillar #3 at LDS and obverse at LDS. The dual portrait cracks at Stage B — one through the hair and another traversing the full facial profile from forehead to jaw — document aggressive structural fatigue. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm with the oversized S above Monticello distinguishing wartime silver-content coins.
