1944 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-002

Description

DDO-002, which Wexler also numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse on the 1944-D Washington quarter with strong spread on the ERTY of LIBERTY, medium spread on the LIB of LIBERTY, the designer's initials, the ribbon end and the 19 of the date, and lighter spread on IN GOD and on TRUST. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-101 (Wexler: FS-25-1944D-101). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, the lower end of the ribbon and the date, plus master die doubling under the nose and on the lower ear. On the obverse a small gouge lies left of the upper part of the 9 in the date and a light crack crosses the bottom of the bust. On the reverse a short strong gouge heads NW from the base of the E of UNITED, and a crack crosses the middle of the E (of E PLURIBUS UNUM) and then the P of PLURIBUS. CONECA lists the die as 2-O-I, and Jim Lafferty submitted it. VarietyVista credits Delma K. Romines. Under UVC-0422 and DMR-003, an early stage A is unconfirmed. Stage B has a crack across the bottom of the bust in a middle state with the reverse middle too, and in stage C both sides are late.
