1944-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011

Description

The 1944-D Washington Quarter DDO-011 is a doubled die obverse variety cataloged with die markers UVC-0494 and DMR-019, documented across three die stages. John Flanagan's Washington portrait presents LIBERTY prominently above the bust; on DDO-011 the doubling targets specifically the RTY portion of that inscription — a moderate spread that is most apparent on higher-grade examples. Stage A is early die state but unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, also unconfirmed. Stage C, the late die state, carries confirming die cracks: a light crack develops across the bust and into the queue; a separate crack runs across the upper hair through the lower legs of the R in LIBERTY; and an additional crack travels northwest toward the rim through the N of IN. The reverse is recorded as early die state in Stage C. The Stage C die cracks assist attribution on worn examples where the LIBERTY doubling is softened. The 1944-D Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver, making examples available at modest cost while the variety rewards diligent examination.
