1944-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-771 and DMR-043, DDR-005 of the 1944 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel exhibits strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, AMERICA, and the last O of MONTICELLO, with lighter extra thickness on FIVE CENTS. This 1944 nickel was struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, with a large P mintmark above Monticello identifying the Philadelphia origin — a mintmark placement unique to the wartime composition years of 1942-1945. The die progressed through multiple stages: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed; Stage B in mid-die state is also unconfirmed; Stage C in late die state shows a reverse die clash through the ribbon knot. The LDS die clash is the confirmed diagnostic marker, indicating the dies struck each other without a planchet and the clash impression persisted through continued use. Wartime Jefferson nickels with their distinctive silver content and mintmark placement are popular with both series collectors and error variety enthusiasts, and the combination of doubled die characteristics with wartime composition adds to the appeal.
