1944-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the numeral 1 of the date characterizes DDO-006 for the 1944-D Washington quarter, a variety that VarietyVista tracked under UVC-0426 with die markers reference DMR-007. Stage A documentation presents an interesting anomaly: numerous die scratches cover the obverse at early-to-mid die state (EMDS), while the reverse has already reached late die state (LDS), suggesting that this reverse die had been previously paired with a different obverse before being married to the DDO-006 obverse die. Stages B and C at mid and late die state remain unconfirmed for this particular die marriage. The die state mismatch between the fresh-ish obverse and the worn reverse is a subtle but diagnostically useful observation, as it tells attribution specialists that the reverse die had accumulated significant wear from an earlier pairing. Denver struck 14,600,800 quarters in 1944, contributing to the wartime coinage that kept commerce flowing during the Second World War. The 1944-D quarter was struck in the standard 90% silver composition that would remain in use until 1965, giving surviving specimens both numismatic and precious metal value. John Flanagan's Washington quarter obverse design, modeled after the Jean-Antoine Houdon bust of George Washington, presents IN GOD WE TRUST in a gentle arc above the portrait where even light doubling becomes visible under moderate magnification, and the isolated doubling on the numeral 1 of the date provides a secondary confirmation point.
