Description

This 1944-D Washington Quarter from the Denver Mint carries the DDO-003 doubled die obverse, with light-spread doubling visible on LIBERTY. Die marriage DMR-004 with die marker UVC-0423 documents three stages: Stage A in Early Die State and Stage B in Mid-Die State remain unconfirmed, while Stage C confirms the obverse in Late Die State with a die crack developing down the eagle's right wing. The die crack on the eagle's right wing in the Late Die State provides an additional diagnostic beyond the obverse doubling itself, as collectors encountering a specimen with this reverse die crack can use it as a secondary confirmation of the die marriage. LIBERTY, positioned above Washington's head on John Flanagan's obverse design, is one of the most commonly affected areas for doubled die obverse varieties on Washington Quarters, since its location at the upper portion of the die makes it susceptible to hub displacement during the impression process.
