Three die stages are documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS); Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage C at late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The EDS confirmation for Stage A provides the cleanest documented die condition, when the repunched S mintmark would have displayed maximum clarity before progressive die wear began softening the secondary impression. The 1943-S Lincoln Wheat Cent is one of the three famous wartime steel cent issues — 1943, 1943-D, and 1943-S — struck in zinc-coated steel rather than bronze to conserve copper for military ammunition production. The steel composition weighs 2.70 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, and the coin's magnetic properties distinguish it from all other Lincoln Cent issues.
