1943 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

The primary repunched mint mark for the 1943 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-001 documents mint mark displacement on a zinc-coated steel cent struck during the wartime composition change. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #5 and Coppercoins 1943S-1MM-005, this variety carries attributions across three major systems. Files retrieved from the late John Bordner indicate he had observed three stages of this variety, providing historical documentation from one of the early systematic variety researchers. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1943-S 1¢ WRPM-001, repunched mint marks occur when the mint mark punch was applied to the working die more than once in slightly different positions, creating a secondary impression adjacent to the primary letter. The 1943 steel cent composition, with zinc plating over a steel core, produces distinctive surface characteristics affecting how repunched mint mark diagnostics present under magnification. The triple cross-reference across Wexler, CONECA, and Coppercoins confirms broad recognition for this wartime steel cent variety.
