Error
Description
Struck on zinc-coated steel during the only year U.S. cents used that composition, this 1943-S Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-003 from the San Francisco Mint was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-156 / DMR-004: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS with a die crack from head to rim west of W of WE, die crack from 3 of date to rim, die crack from bust to rim through D of V.D.B., small die chip in upper 9 of date, small die chip in field above date, large die break in field off lower lapel, die clash from N of CENT at throat, die crack in lower right wheat to rim at MDS, light die crack in lower left wheat to rim, and die crack from N of ONE to rim through R of PLURIBUS. The extraordinary concentration of defects at Stage C documents a severely deteriorated die pair that should have been retired earlier. Weighing 2.70 grams at 19.05 mm diameter, the steel planchet is unique to 1943.
