1943 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
ErrorDescription
Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on this 1943 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and AMERICA, with the spread slightly increasing from left to right. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, with its columned portico and stepped base, provides fine architectural detail where rotational hub displacement creates measurable spread across inscriptions. Reverse die markers include a die dot inside the second U of UNUM, a series of N/S die gouges above the small right window, and many N/S die scratches inside the large center semicircular window. Obverse: none noted. Cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 1943-P WDDR-003. John A. Wexler himself attributed this variety. The 1943-P Jefferson Nickel was struck in the wartime silver alloy (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese), identifiable by the large P mintmark above the dome of Monticello. Wartime alloy nickels tend to exhibit distinctive toning and surface characteristics that can both help and hinder die marker identification.
