1943 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-009
Error
Description
Ninth cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1943 Jefferson Nickel, DDR-009 presents a light spread on UNUM and OF AMERICA — and shares its reverse die with RPM-070, creating a notable die variety pairing where a single reverse die exhibits both a doubled die and a repunched mintmark. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-556 and DMR-090, with Stage A documenting the same reverse die listed as RPM-070 in Early Die State, the obverse also in Early Die State, and Stages B and C unconfirmed. The shared die relationship means collectors finding RPM-070 should also examine for the DDR-009 spread, and vice versa. The 1943 Jefferson Nickel was struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese — a composition adopted from mid-1942 through 1945 to conserve nickel for military use, with the large P mintmark placed above Monticello's dome to distinguish wartime issues. Felix Schlag's design was in its fifth year of production, struck at Philadelphia at 21.2mm. Examine UNUM and OF AMERICA for the light doubled spread, and check the large P mintmark for the RPM-070 repunching that shares this die.
