Description

A dual-variety coin pairing obverse and reverse doubled dies, the 1943 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDR-001 exhibits close Class II distorted hub doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the obverse die identified as 1943-P 5-cent WDDO-004. Class II doubling results from a tilted hub during die preparation, producing distortion effects that vary across the design surface depending on each element's position relative to the tilt axis. The close intensity on E PLURIBUS UNUM requires careful magnification to resolve the secondary contours. The cataloger noted examination was performed on a well-circulated specimen, yet the doubling remained identifiable — evidence that the spread carries sufficient relief to survive wear. No significant reverse die markers beyond the doubling have been noted. This wartime silver alloy issue was struck in the distinctive 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese composition used from 1942 to 1945, with the large P mintmark above Monticello's dome signaling the non-standard alloy.
