1943-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Struck during World War II on a wartime silver alloy planchet composed of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, this 1943-D Jefferson Nickel carries a Class II distorted hub doubled die reverse attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as WDDR-006. The Class II doubling shows nicely on E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing in intensity from left to right, with a much closer spread visible on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Wartime silver nickels are immediately identifiable by the large mint mark placed above the dome of Monticello on the reverse, and the D mint mark on this Denver Mint example occupies this distinctive elevated position. Reverse die markers include a die crack at the top of the dome, a die crack extending north from the D mint mark to the rim, a die gouge below MER of AMERICA, and a die scratch at the top of the center semicircular window. No obverse die markers were noted. The increasing intensity of doubling from left to right across E PLURIBUS UNUM is characteristic of Class II distorted hub varieties where a tilted hub creates progressive displacement.
