1943-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Class II Distorted Hub Doubling characterizes this 1943 Denver Jefferson Nickel DDR, with a very close spread visible on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS, both spreads decreasing from left to right. The decreasing spread pattern is diagnostic of the rotational axis position during the hub distortion event. Obverse die markers include a slanted die scratch on Jefferson's queue and a die gouge appearing as a dot on the center of his collar. The reverse carries a vertical die scratch above the left side of the small right window and die scratches through EN of CENTS. An additional notation flags a possible D/D (repunched mintmark), which if confirmed would make this die doubly notable for carrying two distinct variety types. Whaden Curtis is credited with the attribution. Cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 1943-D WDDR-005. The 1943-D Jefferson was struck in the wartime silver alloy, with the large D mintmark placed above Monticello's dome. Denver produced approximately 15.3 million wartime nickels in 1943, a modest output that makes confirmed varieties from this date and mint relatively scarce.
