1943-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

This 1943-D Jefferson Nickel, struck in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, carries the WDDR-003 doubled die reverse classified as Class VI Distended Hub Doubling. Nice Class VI doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing in strength from left to right across the motto. Die markers on the obverse include a long die crack running from the top front of Jefferson's head down to his chin and a die crack at the top of his head. On the reverse, a die crack runs along the top right building roof of Monticello. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1943-D WDDR-003. Attributed personally by John A. Wexler. Class VI distended hub doubling occurs when the hub expands or contracts slightly between impressions, producing doubling that radiates outward or inward from the design center. The progressive increase in doubling strength from left to right across E PLURIBUS UNUM is characteristic of this class, as the distension effect varies across the die face depending on distance and angle from the expansion point.
