1943-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by Bill Fivaz — co-author of the Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties — and cross-referenced as Wexler 1943-D WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse on a 1943-D Jefferson Nickel struck in wartime silver alloy displays Class II distorted hub doubling. The spread toward center appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS, with spreads increasing from left to right, and tripling is visible on the lower serifs of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Obverse die markers include a wavy die scratch from the upper right of N in IN to just past the upper portion of G in GOD. Reverse markers include a horizontal die scratch under the first S of STATES and a die scratch east from the upper portion of the second O in MONTICELLO. The 1943-D belongs to the wartime silver alloy series (1942-1945), struck in 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, with the large D mintmark placed above Monticello to distinguish the special composition. The tripling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA suggests at least three hubbing impressions contributed to this die.
