Description

Wartime production at Denver yielded DDR-004 on the 1943-D Jefferson nickel, struck in the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese alloy with the large D mintmark positioned above Monticello's dome. Medium spread manifests on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with a triple impression on the motto contrasting against the standard double on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the last O of MONTICELLO. The triple on E PLURIBUS UNUM indicates this portion of the reverse received three distinguishable hub impressions — a relatively uncommon characteristic that makes the motto the prime diagnostic zone for this variety. Denver produced approximately 15.3 million silver-alloy nickels in 1943, one of the lower wartime outputs. Die markers UVC-739 and DMR-025 anchor the attribution in the VarietyVista census. The distinction between triple on the motto and double on the remaining text suggests the hub misalignment involved at least two separate error events during die sinking — or a single complex misalignment where the pivot geometry caused one zone to accumulate three impressions while adjacent areas received only two. The last O of MONTICELLO, being a circular letter, provides a particularly clean diagnostic for the standard double, while the UNUM portion of the motto demands careful examination to resolve three overlapping letter images. The wartime silver composition adds intrinsic bullion value and visual character, with the large D mintmark's prominent position aiding overall die attribution.
