1942 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-027

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team with photographs taken by Brian Ribar for the Wexler RPM Files, this 1942-S Lincoln Wheat Cent is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #14 and Wexler Variety ID 1942-S 1-cent WRPM-027. Die markers on the obverse include a die gouge on Lincoln's lapel, a die gouge inside the shoulder fold near the base of the bust, and a light wavy die crack running N/S through the left side of B in LIBERTY. Reverse markers show a die crack in the lower right wheat. The wavy character of the LIBERTY die crack distinguishes it from typical straight-line fractures, suggesting either non-uniform die steel stress or an underlying structural weakness. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1942-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the early war years when production volumes were increasing rapidly.
