1942-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-017

Description

Documented in the Wexler RPM Files with photographs taken by Brian Ribar, this 1942-S Lincoln Wheat cent carries the designation WRPM-017. On the obverse, Stage A displays a long, nearly vertical die scratch extending from the top of the R in LIBERTY, accompanied by a light die crack running over the designer's initials VDB and continuing to the lapel. By Stage B the die crack has strengthened considerably. The reverse tells its own progressive story: Stage A shows a die gouge south-southwest from the rim between the LU of PLURIBUS, a die gouge dot above the N of ONE, and another die gouge dot to the lower right of the E of ONE. In Stage B the PLURIBUS gouge has weakened, a die crack runs north from the rim at eight o'clock through the wheat grains of the left wheat ear, and a light die crack extends north from the lower area of the right wheat ear grains. The combination of the distinctive vertical scratch on LIBERTY and the cluster of reverse die gouges near ONE and PLURIBUS provides a reliable attribution pathway for this Wexler-documented variety.
