1942 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-012

Description

1942-S WRPM-012 is a repunched mint mark on the 1942-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S West, with the secondary S west of the primary. Obverse Stage A: a long scratch from well below TRUST's second T to the bust's base near the rim; a die dot at the neck; lathe scratches between the rim and the bust; a NW/SE scratch at the bridge of the nose; a NW/SE scratch left of the V in the designer's initials; N/S scratches on the vest folds; and a strong secondary mint mark that shows remnants of its curve to the north. On Stage B the scratch at V.D.B. is weaker and the north curve of the secondary is almost abraded away. Stage C adds a short scratch running south from the rim between TRUST's first T and R and a chip in the field east of WE's E, while the Stage A and B markers are weak. On Stage D the secondary is weak and the Stage A markers are abraded away, and on Stage E the secondary is very weak and most markers are gone. On the reverse, Stage A has a N/S gouge inside CENT's C at its lower left curve; a chip (dot) below the C's upper curve; chips near the rim between PLURIBUS' I and B; and abraded letters. Stage B shows a NNW/SSE scratch against the right side of ONE's O; a very short NE/SW scratch inside the upper ell of CENT's E; and two N/S scratches inside CENT's C joining its upper and lower curves. On Stage C the Stage B markers are present but weaker. On Stage D a chip appears near the rim above the dot between PLURIBUS and UNUM, chips show at the lower opening of UNITED's N, and every marker except the now-weak gouge in CENT's C is gone. On Stage E that gouge is reduced to a very small dimple. Lloyd Hanson submitted Stages A, B, D, and E, and Brian Allen Stage C. CONECA lists it as RPM #13; the Coppercoins number is 1942S-1MM-010.
