1942-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1942-S 1-cent WRPM-008 with cross-references to CONECA RPM number 8 and Coppercoins 1942S-1MM-008, this repunched mintmark variety on the 1942-S Lincoln Wheat Cent shows an S/S/S mintmark punched south and west — indicating three total impressions of the S mintmark, with the earlier punches displaced south and west of the final corrected position. Triple-punched mintmarks are less common than double-punched examples and produce a more complex overlay of secondary impressions around the final mintmark. Two die stages are documented for both obverse and reverse: Obverse Stage A shows many die scratches on the front of Lincoln's coat and two slanted die scratches to the left of the 1 in the date. Obverse Stage B was examined from a circulated coin with no markers detected. Reverse Stage A carries a die scratch through the lower portion of the C of AMERICA, while Reverse Stage B shows a die crack on the upper right side of the right wheat stalk. The 1942-S cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint in standard bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm diameter — the last year before the emergency zinc-coated steel cents of 1943.
