1942 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-007

Description

Seventh and highest-numbered Wexler RPM documented in this sequence for the 1942-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-007 is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #7 and Coppercoins 1942S-1MM-007. Seven repunched mintmarks for a single date and mint provides a statistical window into San Francisco die production practices — each RPM represents a working die where the hand-punched S mintmark was applied with enough positional variation to leave detectable traces of the initial impression. The consistency of RPM discoveries across the 1942-S run suggests the mintmark punching procedure was standardized enough for reliable results yet manual enough that minor misalignments were frequent. Attribution across three independent systems — Wexler, CONECA, and Coppercoins — gives collectors multiple reference points for identifying each variety. As the last year of standard copper composition before wartime changes, 1942-S cents were saved in greater numbers by collectors aware of the impending material transition, providing a larger surviving population from which researchers could identify seven distinct repunched mintmark dies.
