1942-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Designated a Top 100 RPM by Wexler, this 1942-S Lincoln Wheat Cent carries one of the most significant repunched mintmark varieties in the entire cent series. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #4 and Coppercoins 1942S-1MM-004, the variety is thoroughly documented across multiple attribution services. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at the San Francisco Mint during World War II, this coin was produced in the year before wartime metal shortages led to the zinc-coated steel cents of 1943. The obverse die carries extensive markers: slanted die scratches through the 1 of the date, scratches and gouges below the bust, two die scratches from the top left of the 1 running north toward the nose tip, and another left of the 1 going north. On the reverse, a die dot sits left of the O in OF, and a die crack traces the right side wheat kernels running north-south. The Top 100 RPM designation reflects both the variety's visual prominence and its significance within the broader Lincoln Cent mintmark error catalog.
