1942 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-016 / RPM-015

Description

RPM-015 on the 1942-S Lincoln wheat cent, an S/S West repunched mint mark, is cataloged by VarietyVista under its marker codes UVC-1163 and DMR-017, and by Wexler as WRPM-016. Wexler cross-references it to CONECA RPM #15; VarietyVista gives no cross-reference. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes S/S West and tracks three stages, crediting Brian Ribar with stage A, David Bloomberg with stage B and Paul Funaiole with stage C. On the obverse in stage A, a die chip (dot) lies halfway between the lower parts of WE and TRUST, and a strong gouge cuts the U in TRUST just right of its center. Stage B keeps the chip but weakens the gouge on the U. Stage C still has the chip, leaves the gouge very faint, and shows the mint mark a little weaker, on its lower serif only. On the reverse in stage A, one crack begins at the upper left of ONE's E and heads northwest to the middle of the second U in PLURIBUS, another traces the right-hand contour of the right wheat ear from 3:00 to 4:00, and a minor crack sits lower down in the right wheat grains. In stage B the crack along the ear is stronger and reaches south-southeast into the rim, with the other cracks still present. Stage C uses a new reverse die that shows no prominent marks. Wexler credits Brian Ribar with the photos, taken for its RPM Files. VarietyVista credits Paul Funaiole with the report and lists S/S West in three stages. Stage A, an early die state, is unconfirmed. Stage B, a middle die state, shows a small gouge dot sitting between WE's E and TRUST's T, and a light crack heading northwest from the E of ONE to the second U of PLURIBUS. Stage C, a late die state, is also unconfirmed by VarietyVista.
