1942 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-015

Description

Cataloged as UVC-0504, DMR-030, this 1942 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter exhibits light spread on RTY of LIBERTY, the ribbon end, and the 2 of the date. Struck in 90% silver (0.1808 oz ASW), the 1942 quarter was produced at wartime levels as the United States fully mobilized for World War II. Three die stages are recognized: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed); and Stage C in Late Die State, identified by a light die crack across the bust and a crack running down the eagle's right wing to the leaf above the Q of QUARTER. The light spread on the lower portion of LIBERTY and the terminal digit of the date makes DDO-015 a variety that rewards patient examination under moderate magnification. Stage C specimens are the most readily attributable thanks to the dual die crack system, where the bust crack and the wing-to-leaf crack together serve as unmistakable confirmation diagnostics for this die marriage.
