1942 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-0236 and DMR-013, the 1942 Washington Quarter DDO-011 shows light extra thickness on LIBERTY—a Class VI doubling effect concentrated on the obverse inscription. Three die stages trace the die's production arc. Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B reaches mid-die-state with a die crack across the upper hair and another across the bust on the obverse, accompanied by a die crack running down the eagle's right wing on the reverse, also at MDS. Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. While the LIBERTY doubling is described as light, the progressive die cracking at Stage B provides dramatic secondary diagnostics: the combination of hair crack, bust crack, and reverse wing crack indicates significant structural deterioration that would be visible even without magnification on well-preserved specimens. Early-1940s Washington Quarter doubled dies are less frequently encountered than their 1930s counterparts, and the Stage B crack pattern across both obverse portrait and reverse eagle makes this a visually interesting variety despite its light primary doubling.
