1942 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008

Description

Cataloged as UVC-0233, DMR-010, this 1942 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter displays a medium spread on the 19 of the date with light spread on the 42, RTY of LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS shows a light die crack across the bust and a light die crack down the eagle's right wing. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at the Philadelphia Mint during World War II, the 1942 Washington Quarter was among the last wartime silver quarters before the Mint focused production on war-critical needs. John Flanagan's Washington portrait, introduced in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of Washington's birth, anchors the obverse design. The medium spread on the 19 provides the strongest diagnostic for this variety, with the lighter doubling on 42, LIBERTY, and the motto requiring closer examination under magnification.
