1942 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-003

Description

DDO-003, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1942 Washington quarter with strong spread on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST and light spread on the LIB of LIBERTY and the eye. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-101 (Wexler: FS-25-1942-101). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a clockwise spread from a pivot near 1 o'clock on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the lower queue, and faintly on LIB of LIBERTY. On the obverse a crack heads NE through the forehead into the hair and another crosses the bottom of the bust into the lower ribbon. On the reverse a crack descends the eagle's right wing and another heads east off the back of the eagle's head up to the upper left wing. CONECA lists the die as 3-O-V, and Lou Coles submitted it. VarietyVista credits Bill Fivaz. Under UVC-0228 and DMR-005, an early stage A is unconfirmed and stage B has both sides in a middle state. In stage C the obverse is late-middle, with a crack heading east from the eagle's head (late-middle) and a light crack down the lower right wing. Stage D has a crack across the bust into the ribbon (late) and a late reverse. Stage E, very late, adds a light crack on the forehead and hair and a crack from BUS of PLURIBUS to the wing.
