1942 Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001 on the 1942 Mercury dime, which Wexler also numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse with a strong spread on the date that shows as 42/41. Both catalogs give the CONECA number 1-O-III and the Cherrypickers number FS-101, which Wexler writes as FS-10-1942-101 with 010.7. Wexler records the date as a 1942 hubbed over a 1941. On the obverse a scratch runs from the lower right of the N in IN to the upper left of the E in WE, and a short scratch runs SW from the lower left of the 4. On the reverse a short scratch runs NW to the olive branch from the lower left of the fasces. Frank Doty, Jr. submitted the coin, and Wexler adds Breen #3673. VarietyVista describes the 42/41 spread on the date as strong, with a medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, cites FS-101, and tracks the die under its marker codes UVC-153 and DMR-003.
