Cataloged by MadDieClashes as ADC-10C-1942-01, this 1942 Philadelphia Mercury Dime preserves evidence of an atypical die clash — a specialized form of die contact that differs from ordinary clashes in the angle or rotation at which the dies struck each other. In a standard die clash, the dies come together without a planchet in their normal aligned orientation, transferring mirror-image design elements onto the opposing face. An atypical clash occurs when the dies meet at an unusual angle or with lateral displacement, producing transferred elements in unexpected positions on the struck coin.
