1942 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

1942-D WDDR-006 is a doubled die reverse on the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The left wheat ear and stem show a Class II spread toward the center, and EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM) and the dots show some Class VI extra thickness. Obverse: three scratches running south from LIBERTY's B, E, and Y; a diagonal scratch behind the collar and lower hair; a gouge right of the top of GOD's O; scratches on both sides of TRUST's first T; two gouges at the rim over TRUST's ST; and a SW-to-NE scratch right of the throat. Reverse: parallel SW-to-NE scratches between the left dot and the bottom of EPU's E; a SSW-to-NNE gouge between the top of UNITED's D and the first S of STATES; and parallel scratches curving NNW to SSE through UNITED's U and the O of OF. James C. Moreland submitted the variety, with updated photos taken on a coin from Brian Ribar. The Coppercoins number is 1942D-1DR-005. Wexler's comments say this die was once thought to pair with 1942-D 1¢ WDDO-006 (its Stage B obverse), but that proved wrong because its mint mark position differs from WDDO-006, so the cross-reference was removed.
