1942 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1942-D WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), both dots, and both upper wheat ears show extra thickness, and the upper left ear and some letters of EPU also show separation toward the center. The Stage A obverse has a chip (dot) on the back of the neck, northeast of LIBERTY's Y. Stage B keeps the chip and adds a dot in the field below IN's N at its right edge; faded scratches behind the hair; a long crack that starts above the eye and runs NNW onto the forehead; a horizontal crack on the middle of the forehead above that one; and a crack above the ear. On Stage C all the Stage B markers remain and the cracks are stronger. On the Stage A reverse there is a small dot right of the middle of CENT's C, and another just above the diagonal bar of ONE's N, near its right joint. Stage B adds two small gouges above CENT's T, a dot above the O of OF, and a series of vertical scratches through the E and P of E PLURIBUS. On Stage C those vertical scratches have worn away, while the dots above CENT's T and OF's O can still be seen. Peter Beane submitted Stage A, J. C. Moreland Stage B, and Bill Wilson Stage C.
