1942-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-1541 (DMR-020), DDR-002 of the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows light extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Die stage records track this variety across multiple states: Stage A at early-to-mid die state (EMDS, an intermediate classification between standard EDS and MDS), Stage B with reverse and obverse at mid die state, and Stage C showing both sides at late die state. This progression traces the die's working life from fresh surfaces through accumulated fatigue. The year 1942 holds special significance as the last year of standard bronze composition before the wartime transition to zinc-coated steel in 1943, driven by copper conservation for military use. Denver Mint cent production was substantial as the facility operated at wartime capacity, increasing the likelihood that multiple die states entered circulation. While the extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM is light, the variety rewards careful examination under magnification, particularly when comparing letter thickness against a normal 1942-D cent.
