1941-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-001 and cross-referenced as FS-801 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this 1941 San Francisco Mint Washington Quarter doubled die obverse shows medium spread on the lower RTY of LIBERTY. The Cherrypickers listing confirms its significance as a variety important enough for inclusion in the standard cherry-picking reference. Die stages are documented with codes UVC-0210 and DMR-006: Stage A represents early die state, Stage B is mid-die state, and Stage C reaches late die state with a light die crack in the upper hair beneath ER of LIBERTY. The reverse is itself listed as DDR-001, creating a dual doubled die — doubled on both obverse and reverse — that substantially increases collector interest. Additionally, the reverse carries mintmark style MMS-001 (Small), noting a smaller-than-standard S mintmark. A late die state crack runs from the eagle's right wing to Q of QUARTER. The convergence of doubled die obverse, doubled die reverse, and distinctive small mintmark style makes this 1941-S quarter a multi-feature variety of considerable research interest.
