1941 (S) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

The 1941-S Washington quarter WDDR-001, which VarietyVista lists as DDR-001, is a doubled die reverse whose obverse die is itself a doubled die, listed by Wexler as WDDO-001 with a very close counterclockwise spread on the ERTY of LIBERTY. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-801 (Wexler: FS-25-1941S-801). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes strong extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR, on the eagle's head, and on the lower leaves and the ends of the branches. On the obverse a short gouge sticks out of the R in LIBERTY on its left side; on the reverse a crack descends the eagle's right wing and reaches the Q in QUARTER. CONECA lists the die as 1-R-II+VI, and Whaden Curtis submitted it. VarietyVista, crediting Michael L. Ellis, describes strong extra thickness on the rim lettering, the stems and E PLURIBUS UNUM. It gives the reverse mint mark style as MMS-001 (Small) and lists the obverse as DDO-001. Under UVC-0210 and DMR-006, an early stage A and a middle stage B are unconfirmed; stage C has the wing crack reaching the Q of QUARTER in a late state, the obverse (DDO-001) in a middle state, and a light crack in the upper hair beneath ER of LIBERTY.
