1941-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cataloged as UVC-100, DMR-004, this 1941 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the S/S punched northwest, leaving the initial S impression visible to the northwest of the final corrected position. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in EDS, Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The northwest direction of the secondary S provides a distinctive diagnostic for attribution, distinguishing RPM-002 from other repunched mintmark varieties on the 1941-S cent. Struck in 95% copper at the San Francisco Mint, the 1941-S Wheat Cent was produced in the final full year before wartime composition changes altered the Lincoln Cent's metallic content. San Francisco continued hand-punching mintmarks onto individual working dies throughout this period, and the variety of directional shifts documented across different RPM listings for the 1941-S reflects the inherent variability in this manual process.
