1941 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

The 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WRPM-008 is a repunched mintmark variety in which the S mintmark was applied to the working die on more than one occasion, leaving evidence of a prior punch beneath the final position. This variety is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #8 and Coppercoins 1941S-1MM-008. The Wexler Variety ID is 1941-S 1¢ WRPM-008. The 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was produced during the final years of normal copper cent production before the wartime switch to zinc-coated steel in 1943, giving the date a modest numismatic profile that makes its RPM varieties accessible to collectors at the lower end of the variety market. Repunched mintmarks on S-mint cents of this era reflect the continued hand-punching of individual working dies at the San Francisco Mint, a practice that routinely produced slight misalignments requiring secondary or tertiary punches. Attribution requires magnification focused on the S mintmark, looking for notching, shadowing, or a secondary S impression at a different angle or position from the final mintmark. The CONECA and Coppercoins cross-references provide the two primary corroborating catalog entries for confirming the attribution.
