Description

The curved form of the S mintmark makes San Francisco repunches visually distinctive compared to Denver's angular D, and the 1941-S WRPM-005 Lincoln wheat cent showcases this characteristic. Because the S has no straight edges, a repunched S typically manifests as thickened curves, a notch where two serif ends overlap, or a ghostly secondary S peeking from behind the final impression. San Francisco struck over 92 million cents in 1941 — the highest S-mint wheat cent production to that point — requiring a large number of working dies and correspondingly more opportunities for mintmark placement errors.
