Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-106 and DMR-010, this 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-008 features a repunched S mintmark from the San Francisco Mint during the final pre-war year of cent production before the 1942 entry of the United States into World War II. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die-state (MDS); and Stage C at late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The MDS confirmation for Stage B establishes the typical specimen condition for this variety, with both dies showing moderate production wear while retaining the S/S mintmark detail necessary for confident attribution. The 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint in standard bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter — the last year this composition would be used at San Francisco before the wartime changes beginning in 1943. The 1941-S had a mintage of approximately 92.4 million pieces, reflecting the expanding pre-war economy's demand for circulating coinage. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait, and the wheat ears reverse was in its 33rd year. The eighth cataloged RPM for the 1941-S documents one of multiple mintmark positioning corrections at the San Francisco facility during 1941 die preparation, and the UVC-106 identifier within the VarietyVista system places this variety in the early portion of the comprehensive variety code sequence. The S mintmark's curved letter form provides multiple diagnostic points around the letter's sinuous profile where primary and secondary impressions diverge.
