Description
From the early years of the Jefferson Nickel series, this 1941-S RPM-004 documented by VarietyVista exhibits S/S North with MMS-001 (Small mintmark), indicating the S punch was physically smaller than the standard-size punch used on other dies of the period. Die markers UVC-1741 / DMR-020 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with both reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The Small mintmark classification adds a punch-variety dimension to the attribution. Struck at San Francisco in 1941, this nickel is 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm diameter. The 1941-S predates the wartime silver alloy by one year, making it among the last prewar San Francisco Jefferson Nickels in standard composition before the emergency alloy adoption in mid-1942.
