1941 Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse on the 1941 Mercury dime with medium extra thickness on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials. Both catalogs give the CONECA number 1-O-VI. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls the extra thickness strong on the same three areas and follows the die through two stages. At Stage A an NNW/SSE scratch crosses the W of WE on the obverse, and the reverse has nothing significant. At Stage B the obverse adds a strong gouge heading south off the R in TRUST at its right leg, NE/SW scratches through the designer's initials, and heavy crisscrossing scratches on both sides of the head; the reverse shows a clash mark in the middle left olive leaves and strong NW/SE scratches above E PLURIBUS UNUM. Thomas McGowan submitted Stage A, and Keith Christenson supplied the Stage B photos. VarietyVista tracks the die under its marker codes UVC-126 and DMR-003.
