Description

Bearing two separate cuds on its reverse — cataloged independently as 01R and 2R — this 1941 Philadelphia Mint Mercury Dime represents an uncommon dual-cud occurrence where two distinct sections of the reverse die rim fractured and separated during the same production run. Each cud formed when a piece of the die rim broke away, leaving a cavity that filled with metal to produce a raised featureless mass at the rim edge. Dual cuds require either simultaneous fractures or sequential failures close enough in time that the die remained in service between breaks, and both scenarios reflect advanced die fatigue. Adolph Weinman's Mercury Dime — more properly the Winged Liberty Head — was struck from 1916 through 1945, and the 1941 date falls squarely in the World War II production era when Philadelphia operated at high volume to meet wartime demand. Die stress from extended press runs made rim fractures a recurring event, but two cuds on a single coin elevates this specimen above the typical single-cud variety. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this dual reverse cud stands as the only Mercury Dime cud documented in this batch.
