Description

Medium spread hub doubling on the motto of this 1940 San Francisco Washington Silver Quarter, showing visible displacement on GOD, WE, and ST of IN GOD WE TRUST. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die tracking code UVC-0147 and die marriage reference DMR-005, three die stages document the progression of this die's working life. Stage A, the earliest confirmed state, features a die gouge connecting the top of the T and Y in LIBERTY with both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS). Stage B represents mid-die state (MDS), though it remains unconfirmed. Stage C, late die state (LDS), is also unconfirmed. The die gouge connecting TY in LIBERTY serves as a particularly strong diagnostic marker because it is a unique, permanent feature of this specific die that will not appear on any other DDO for this date. San Francisco struck approximately 2.8 million quarters in 1940, a low mintage that makes any die variety from this date-mint inherently scarce in collector hands.
