1940 (S) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1940-S WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-S Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling spreads north on IN GOD WE TRUST and on the underside of the nose. On the obverse, parallel scratches head SW off the bottom of the E in LIBERTY, and a scratch heads ESE off the bottom of the Y. On the reverse, a crack runs down the right wing and reaches the Q in QUARTER at its upper left side; another crack crosses the US of PLURIBUS and then heads down the eagle's left wing over its upper half. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
