1940 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-013

Description

1940-S WRPM-013 is a repunched mint mark on the 1940-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S West, with the secondary S west of the primary. On the Stage A obverse the primary mint mark sits higher and nearer the 9 than on WRPM-010 and WRPM-018, and it shows a separation at the upper serif not seen on either of those; it also sits higher than on WRPM-014 through WRPM-017 (014, 015, 016, and 017). Other Stage A markers: a circular scratch between the 1 and 9; an ENE scratch running into the field from the vest's top; an east-by-north/west-by-south scratch on the upper vest; lathe marks near the rim from above GOD's OD to the W of WE; a small gouge at the rim at 10:15; a scratch running south by east from the bottom of LIBERTY's T; a gouge at the rim at 7:00; and light die deterioration only near the rim. On Stage B the scratches at the 1 and 9 and the one from the vest into the field are abraded away, every other Stage A marker is weaker, and the deterioration near the rim is heavier. On Stage C everything is abraded away except the gouge at the rim at 10:15, and the deterioration is stronger. On Stage D that gouge is still present and the deterioration near the rim is very strong. Reverse Stage A: a light crack from the lower right of PLURIBUS' second U running southwest through the upper left of ONE's E, and a N/S crack on the right wheat ear that begins at the lower right grains and shifts through the upper left grains. On Stage B the crack at the U is stronger and the crack on the right wheat remains. Stage C is a new reverse die, with lathe marks close to the rim over most of PLURIBUS. On Stage D those lathe marks are weaker, and a light die line runs NNW to the rim from the left wheat tip, starting on its left side.
