1940-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-011

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #3 and Coppercoins 1940S-1MM-003, the 1940-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WRPM-011 presents two well-documented die stages with markedly different characteristics. Stage A shows north-south die scratches through the date and die scratches south from the beard on the obverse, with no prominent reverse markers. Stage B transforms the variety's profile considerably: the Stage A die scratches weaken, the secondary mintmark impression becomes less distinct, and the reverse develops a retained cud in the area between 2:30 and 4:00 that encompasses a portion of the right wheat grains. Additional Stage B reverse deterioration includes a die crack from the rim at 10:00 running south-southeast into the wheat lines. The retained cud on Stage B specimens makes this one of the more visually dramatic RPM varieties in the 1940-S series, as the raised cud area combined with the repunched mintmark creates a coin with two distinct forms of die anomaly—one from die preparation and one from die failure.
