1940 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

1940-S WRPM-006 is a repunched mint mark on the 1940-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S/S East & East: two secondary S punches, both east of the primary. On the Stage A obverse a crack runs east from the front of the shoulder into the lapel, then turns SE and reaches the rim. Stage B adds a crack leaving the rim at 7:00 and heading NE to the bust, and Stage C still shows the Stage A and B markers. On Stage D the 7:00 crack enters the shoulder and then bends NNE toward the shoulder's back, a new WNW/ESE crack appears on the shoulder between the two earlier cracks, and the crack through the lapel to the rim is stronger. The Stage A reverse has a crack leaving the rim at 9:00 heading NE, then turning north to climb the left wheat ear's grains along its left side, and a crack running NNW from the upper left of ONE's O through the left side of PLURIBUS' L to the rim. Stage B is a new reverse die, with a very heavy crack heading SE from the rim at 10:00 and running down the wheat ear's left side, then leaving it SW at 8:00 to reach the rim. On Stage C the cracks run into the rim, and a crack from the rim at 9:00 runs east to the Stage B crack. Stage D is a third reverse die, with light cracks along the right wheat ear's right side. Lloyd Hanson submitted Stages A and B, Joseph Baker Stage C, and John Bordner Stage D. CONECA lists it as RPM #7; the Coppercoins number is 1940S-1MM-007. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties. Wexler and CONECA list it on their Top 100 RPM lists.
