1940 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

1940-S WRPM-003 is a repunched mint mark on the 1940-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S Northeast: the extra S sits northeast of the primary one. On the obverse, a scratch heads SW from the 9 of the date, starting at its left center, a circular lathe mark covers most of the obverse, and another scratch runs NNE from the Y of LIBERTY, starting at its upper left. The reverse is marked by cracks. One starts at the rim at 12:15 and runs SSE, crossing the S of PLURIBUS low on its left side and the E of ONE high on its left side. Another runs east-west through the UM of UNUM. A third leaves the rim at 4:00 and heads NW to the wheat ear, and a fourth follows the right grain of the right wheat ear. A last crack leaves the rim at 8:00 heading NE into the left grain of the left ear, then turns upward through the grains and wheat lines. Lloyd Hanson submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as RPM #4, and Coppercoins as 1940S-1MM-004. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties. Wexler and CONECA list it on their Top 100 RPM lists.
